Twin Pregnancy PDF Print E-mail

Just found out you are pregnant with twins or more? Finding out you are carrying two or more babies can be quite a surprise. Often it is a joyful surprise followed by growing panic. Twin pregnancy need not be a cause for panic though. Although Doctors and midwives will monitor your pregnancy more closely because carrying more than one baby increases your risk of complications, this does not mean that you are going to have complications. For every twin mum with complications there will be a twin mum with a dream pregnancy. While you have no control over ultimately which type of pregnancy you will have it pays to be aware of what to expect, what complications can arise and when to ask for help.

Lead Maternity Carer (LMC)

In New Zealand expectant mothers must choose who they want to be responsible for their care during the pregnancy. However there seem to be a number of different types of LMC. Selecting a LMC is a very personal decision. This page provides a brief outline of what to expect from your LMC.

Eating for 3 or more

Eating a good balanced diet is important in any pregnancy but is even more so in a twin pregnancy. Good nutrition not only ensures your babies get the best possible start in life but it may also help lower your risk of complications.

Postnatal Support

When you have twins it is important to have access to a strong support network. This network may be a combination of family and friends and community-based services depending on your personal situation. Sometimes the biggest problem twin mothers have in seeking support is that they just don't know where to find it.
